When Andy and I tell people about our living arrangement, living in a 50 square foot semi or a 40ft RV, a lot of them look at us with a very weird expression on their face and ask, “How can you do that?!?!“
We just smile and say that we enjoy it and are having fun. Believe me it is not all fun and games! We still have moments.
In the beginning of this venture, it was really tough. I was invading his space and he was with me all the time. We have been so used to living alone and separate lives basically that we had to get to know each other all over again.
We have known each other for about 40 years as friends and as husband and wife. We have worked hard at this relationship from the very beginning. We lived in El Paso, TX for the first almost year because he was in the Army.
On weekends, we would go to the park, a restaurant or somewhere else in public and talk about what had been bothering us throughout the week in a public place which forced us to be nonjudgmental and not take things personally and overreact.
This activity does not happen much these days but we learned early on that if there is an issue, we either deal with it together or on our own but we know it needs to be resolved. We also ask each other if things are going okay.
I do have to admit that I like to stuff things down until I explode BUT I am getting better at either talking about it or releasing it so it does not explode.
Our relationship is not perfect and we are 2 totally different people in almost all areas of our life BUT we work. Not sure why but we do. He is my best friend, my husband, and my life!
This is how we can do this; we are friends first!
